Housing: Exceptional Assistance Measures

Published:

COVID-19 has created a variety of housing problems. Some people are having trouble paying their rent. Others can’t move into their new homes. New measures might offer help.

Tenants  – you can receive an interest-free loan

If COVID-19 has made it difficult to pay your rent, you can receive a $1,500 interest-free loan to help pay your May and June rent.

You must apply to the Société d’habitation du Québec (Quebec housing agency) by July 15th, 2020. The application can be found here. You must repay the loan by August 1st, 2021. The money will be paid directly to your landlord.

Tenants or home buyers prevented from moving can be reimbursed for cost of temporary housing and storage

If you can’t move into your new home, because some work could not be completed in time due to  COVID-19, you can be reimbursed for the cost of temporary housing. You can receive up to $2,000 per month for 2 months.

You can also be reimbursed up to $1,000 for storage and moving costs.

You are eligible for these programs if your primary residence was to be available for you to move in  between April 1st and August 31st, 2020 but will not be available because of COVID-19. Work must have begun by March 25th, 2020. Some examples that qualify are:

  • You were going to rent an apartment or house that has been newly constructed.
  • You bought a newly constructed residence (house or condo).
  • If you moved out to renovate and cannot return (tenant or owner).

You can also qualify if:

  • Your new home is not available due to COVID-19. For example, if the person who was moving out cannot do so.
  • You can’t move into your new home due to travel restrictions.

The application is available here (French only).
