Proposed reforms to the Youth Protection Act

2005-10-14

The Quebec government has introduced a bill that would overhaul the Youth Protection Act. Among other changes, it proposes to limit the amount of time given to parents to regain custody of children taken out of their care. After a fixed time period would elapse, the parents would lose all rights to their kids. What do you think?

The opinion of other participants:

I agree. It is in the children’s best interest to be placed in a stable home as soon as possible.

I agree, but only if all attempts to get the parents back on the right track have failed.

I disagree. This will force many children to stay in youth centres since there won’t be enough families willing to take them in.

I disagree. Once a parent, always a parent - nothing and no one should prevent them from getting their children back.
